Annual Report - Friends of the Lee Library 6/29/11
I am saddened to start my “Friends” report off with the acknowledgment that Lisa Morin has resigned as Library Director as of July 31, 2011. Lisa has been a rock for our group, always finding time to assist; researching items; events; information as needed; helping coordinate our ideas and always providing a positive approach. I know I speak for everyone on our Friends of the Lee Library Board – we will miss you terribly Lisa but we also wish you the very best in your new life endeavors!!!
The Friends continue to have a very supportive membership base and we hope to increase that membership in the upcoming fiscal year. We currently hold $5,134.00 in our account for Library funding. The Friends currently have 57 family memberships; 16 single memberships; and 18 senior memberships for a total of 91 memberships. Our memberships alone raise over $2,000.00 per year as many members include additional donations. We sincerely appreciate all our members and we hope to double our membership for 2011-2012!
Our highlight for this year was our community event Holiday Concert held at the Grange after the annual tree lighting.
We had Gary Hunter and the “Black Pudding Rovers” perform an Irish holiday music event on December 4, 2010. This concert was free for residents of Lee and ushered in by a bagpipers’ melody floating into the night for all to join us in the Grange – and join us they did! Refreshments were served and a great time was had by all who attended. We appreciate the community support and plan to continue this event.
Several Library requests were able to be funded this year such as: Don Grady Marionettes for February vacation along with Madbury and Durham; the showing of the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” with the story line animated by actor Richard Clark in March at the Madbury Town Hall; and April vacation entertainment was “Roger Ticknell”. Winter found us hosting a photo contest with a $50.00 gift certificate to Michael’s as the prize. The “Story of Winter” photos made a beautiful display at the Library. The Friends continue to support the Summer Reading Program providing entertainment last summer with the “Toe Jam Puppet Band”; Wildlife Encounters; and storyteller Simon Brooks.
The Friends also provide refreshments at the annual Lee Town Meeting in March thanks to the generosity of our wonderful bakers, and in turn, the community has been very generous with their donations for these goodies which goes right back into funding Library requests.
Friends provide funding for:
- Purchasing 1000 “Lee Library” magnets for patrons. We also passed out magnets at Town Meeting for residents.
- Renewing “Book Page” a monthly newspaper that has author interviews, book reviews, and interesting articles along the literary lines for Library patrons.
- Funding for the “Children’s Corner” in the Library
Purchasing 180 books for prizes for grades 1 through 6 for Summer Reading Program “Prize Chest” rewards.
Purchasing the after school snacks of pretzels and juice for children who attend.
The Friends also fund the purchase of:
- Boston Museum of Science pass
- Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth pass
- Boston Children’s Museum pass
- Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum pass
- Boston Museum of Fine Arts pass
- Dover Children’s Museum pass
- Currier Museum of Art pass
