WHY SHOULD I RECYCLE?
Because it’s the only right thing to do? Or because you want to be the smallest cause possible for the HUGE landfill up the street in Gonic? Or because it really helps hold back on Lee taxes? In March of 2003 the Lee residents decided to go on the path of the maximum benefit possible from recycling. You may not have been part of that decision, BUT the commitment was to build the state of the art facility and be able to get the maximum $ possible from recycling income and the money savings possible from this facility. So in 2007 the townspeople received the award from the NRRA (Northeast Resource Recovery Association) for “Most recycling tonnage for a town under 5,000 population”. However, we still have a way to go. If you were to stand at the “wall” where the trash is
thrown and see the bags that split open full of glass, cans and bottles that should be recycled you’d wonder how we possibly got an award. The only reason possible for all of the non- recycling is a lack of knowledge and lack of motivation. To be fair to all of the residents that do a good job recycling the Board of Selectmen have considered imposing “Pay-per-Bag” with a free bag to all families every week. Any family that recycles only needs one bag per week and the $2.00 cost per bag for the non-recyclers means that they are no longer a burden on the rest of the taxpayers. The remaining residents that don’t recycle may bring this plan down on us.
