Heating & Electric Assistance - Fuel Assistance

If you are experiencing difficulty with your electric or heating bills, the first thing you must do is call your provider to set up a payment plan. This will allow you to catch up on your bill and prevent a shut-off.

Strafford County Community Action administers heating and utility assistance programs for residents of Strafford County. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as Fuel Assistance, provides income-eligible households with help in paying energy bills during the winter heating months. You may also apply for the Electrical Assistance Program (this gives you a monthly discount on your electric bill) and Weatherization (this program can help to make your home more fuel efficient) at the same time. You may be eligible even if your heat is included in your rent! In that case payment would go to your landlord in lieu of rent. Eligible household receive grants ranging from $120 to $975, depending on household income and yearly heating costs. Applicants must provide information about the heating fuel costs for the previous 12 months. Household with the least amount of income and the highest heating costs receive the greatest Fuel Assistance Grants. You must call to make an appointment. Applications are accepted September 1st - April 30th and assistance is provided from December 1st – April 30th.
